On Dostoyevsky and Rachmaninoff

Just when I thought last week's issue of the Alleghany News was going to be a complete bust with nothing more than the usual automobile crash on US 21 or NC 18, there it was ... hidden in the Classifieds: "Retired Russian Lady offering Russian language or classical piano lessons. Reasonable rates."

Now, don't get me wrong. The Russian language is a beautiful language and classical piano music is beautiful music. But, can you not just see it now; one of our good old Alleghany County boys, Red Man in cheek, heading out on a frosty winter morning in his camouflaged pickup with a 30-30 nestled in the gun rack to spend a few hours in his deer stand at daybreak, sitting on his butt, knocking off a few chapters of Dostoyevsky until that 12 point buck cames into range. Then back home in the afternoon to perfect a few tricky passages of a Rachmaninoff concerto on the trusty Steinway before gutting that deer for dinner.

Sure hope the lady has a good Russian pension to fall back on ... just in case.
