Catherine's Knob
Well, artic air out of the north foiled today's plans to hike to the top of Elk Knob, the highest point in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Temperatures in the teens, a stiff breeze and a mountain bald at 5200+ feet will do that kind of thing to your plans.
So, we visited Catherine's Knob, at 4200+ feet the highest point in Alleghany County, instead.
We've been looking at Catherine's Knob for years but had never been there. It's a fairly simple exercise these days with a well maintained service road coursing through a huge Christmas tree farm to Skybest's cellular tower. Here's the view looking east toward Air Bellows.

As you see, we were not at the very top. That's about a quarter mile away across a large summer pasture. The weather being what it was, we elected to leave that to a warmer day.
