Dummy Me

We got a notice in the mail yesterday that our subscription to the Alleghany News would expire in a couple of weeks. The notice was on a nice postcard with a metered postage stamp, computer generated mailing label, an email address for subscriptions, a telephone number, a facsimile number and, of course, a postal address (PO Box 8). Not wanting to miss a thing down the road, I pick up the phone and ask for the Subscriptions Department. When I enquire about the Senior Citizens rate, a nice lady with a distinct Alleghany County accent assures me that I don't yet qualify. No AARP "seniors" here; you gotta be 62.

"Bummer", I sez. "Let me give you my debit card number."

"Oh", she sez. "Just put the notice in an envelope with a check. We don't have a credit/debit card machine."

I should have known that a 117-year old newspaper wouldn't take plastic.

Dummy me.
