Little Richard's Barbecue

Now, folks, I'm here to tell you that the Lexington-style barbecue at Little Richard's in Winston-Salem is a good as it gets. In fact, on the barbecue driving time scale, it's easily a 3-hour joint. It's definitely in my Top 10, and somewhere in the Top 4.

It's strictly pork shoulders cooked over wood coals in brick pits, and served with a very nice western-style dipping sauce at Little Richard's. I'm partial to the coarse-chopped 'que, but the regular is might fine, too. The barbecue slaw and sweetea are really outstanding, also. As for the hush puppies, well, nobody hand rolls 'em anymore. But, they do still have curb service.

If you go on a Friday night, give the yard bird a try. It's cooked in the same pits and is near about as good as the pork.

Now you have to pay attention to which Little Richard's you visit. A number of others abound with same name and logo (as the result of a family feud or some such thing). They are inferior gassers and are to be avoided. The locations of the only two authentic Little Richard's are:

4885 Country Club Road
Winston-Salem, NC
(336) 760-3457

and

5353 Gumtree Road
Wallburg, NC
(336) 769-4227

To get to the one in Winston-Salem, go northbound on the Jonestown Road exit off US-421 (west of the city) and then, after a few blocks, make a left turn onto Country Club Road. It's just a few more blocks on your right. All you'll need to find it is your nose!

As their motto advises, you'll surely be inclined to "Eat Mo' Pig" after you try their barbecue!
