Mountain to Sea Trail
The older, longer Appalachian trial passes well to the west of Alleghany County. But, we are now host to 14.4 miles of the Mountain to Sea Trail (MST) that eventually will cross North Carolina from Clingman's Dome in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park to Jockey's Ridge State Park by the Atlantic Ocean, with a total length of 908 mile.
The north access of the MST in Alleghany County is at Devil’s Garden Overlook (Mile Post 235.7) and the south access is at NC-18 in Laurel Springs (Mile Post 248.1). There is also an access point at the intersection of Air Bellows Gap Road and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
I've seen the new trailhead markers and a hike of it is on my short list of things to do this summer.
