Basin Creek Country Store

The fast food places have just about ruined hamburgers in America. But, if you look hard enough, you can still find a few joints serving up a really good burger.

Basin Creek Country Store at 2000 North Bridge Street in Elkin is one such a place. Not only are their burgers wonderful -- especially their signature Basin Creek Burger in the Carolina-style and served medium well done -- and their beer-batter onion rings sinful, but it's also just a really neat place.

In the back room, there's a real fireplace with a real log fire in the winter. A hundred or so kind of beers, including Bass ale on draft, can be consumed at the bar. On the side porch, you can bring your dog to dinner with you with anyone so much as raising an eyebrow. (In fact on our last visit, they brought Sam a bowl of water without even being asked!)

Apparently it's the place to go in Elkin to show off your Harley "hog". There might be a couple of dozen of 'em in the parking lot at any given time. Don't let the bikers throw you off; none of them are Hell's Angels. Just be sure not to sit directly behind the tailpipes of a parked Harley when when dining on the porch.

These folks are open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas and they stay open at night until people quit ordering burgers.

The easiest way to get there is to follow the US21N bypass off I-77, take a left turn onto Poplar Springs Road at the little ABC store, and then another left onto Bridge Street. It's on the left, up the hill a little ways, across from Tractor Supply.

Man, I wish I had one of those Basin Creek Burger right now with its juices running down one hand and a Bass ale in the other!
