Chicken Dinner

At the concert tonight at the Blue Ridge Music Center, Wayne Henderson told us a story about visiting with his aunt and uncle for Sunday dinner (as in breakfast, dinner, and supper).

His aunt was a wonderful cook and this day she did not disappoint. She had fried chicken. And, chicken salad, baked chicken, chicken and dumplings, chicken casserole, grilled chicken and chicken pot pie. Not wanting to appear ungratefully, Wayne had a generous helping of each before waddling out to the front porch to sit for a spell.

About that time a chicken came walking across the front yard, but soon began to weave from side to side. Then it stumbled along in a halting gait before falling over on its side.

"What's wrong with that chicken?", Wayne asked his uncle.

"Don't rightly know, son", his uncle replied, "but them chickens been dying faster than we can eat 'em."
