Day 3: Chillin' Out (Revised)

The telephone calls I've gotten from a number of my former colleagues over the past two days are very much appreciated. Should anyone ask about me, please let them know I will certainly welcome their calls or email messages (dlineback@bellsouth.net). And, of course, feel free to refer them to this blog for updates on my newest adventure in life.

Sam and I have escaped to the mountains to chill out for a week or so. On the way up we stopped at the Allen and Son barbecue joint on NC-86 north of Chapel Hill.

As you can see here, the place was jumpin'. Cars were parked everywhere on both sides of the road. Keith Allen makes one of the top three or four best pulled pork barbecues in North Carolina. To get there, take the exit off I-40 and go north on NC-86 for a mile or two. It's hidden in a copse of trees on the left side just before you get to the railroad tracks. The smell will tell you are there!

I spent a pleasant afternoon yesterday weeding my botanical garden. That's a good thinking activity because it requires so little CPU usage. The predominant weed was the violet. Ok, if you want violets, they are flowers, but if don't, they are weeds of the worst kind. They seem to grow best where the weeds I consider to be flowers are growing.

This is the first time in 46 years I've not had a job or school or both waiting for me the next day. It's really weird going to bed at night and getting up the next morning without having thoughts of them on my mind.

After two days, my guess is that I'm not ready for full-time retirement. But, I'll give it a shot for a few more days.

Now, let me see. Alleghany County really could use a decent barbecue joint. Hmmm ...
