On This Date in History

On the instructions of Adolf Hitler, the Germany army began its invasion of Russia on June 22, 1941. It ended badly with Hitler blowing out his brains with a 7.65mm Walther in the Führerbunker on April 30, 1945 as the Red Army overran Berlin.

I'm reading an old book, The Life and Death of Adolph Hitler, and it seems the man was a failure at everything he tried save one.

Hitler lived his entire life in small, sparse rooms, even at the height of his power. He had little capacity for alcohol and did not drink. He abhored tobacco and was a vegetarian in diet. He lived his early life in extreme poverty and never amassed any personal wealth. He aspired to be an artistic painter but was twice rejected by the art institute and painted picture postcards for a living instead. As a soldier, he never rose above the rank of a low-level enlisted man. He developed no lasting friendships. He lived all his life, save the final day or so, as a bachelor and had no children. He did, however, become interested in politics and rose to power became he was perhaps the best orator who ever lived.

But, as Hitler ultimately learned, oratory may win minds but, in and off itself, doesn't win wars.
