Dirt

The CFO and I went to Boone last evening for a concert by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. If you don't know them, they are a rock ... not exactly ... country ... not quite ... blue grass ... sorta ... Americana ... could be ... band. What they are really is bunch of guys who got together in a guitar shop in California over 40 years ago and have been pleasing audiences ever since with Dirt music, folk rock or whatever it is. Three of the guys -- John McEuen, Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden -- have been with the group since its founding.

McEuen, an amazing musician, played fiddle, mandolin, guitar and, of course, banjo last evening. He did not sing. Fadden played drums and harmonica and sang. Hanna played guitar and was the lead singer. They performed country, bluegrass, gospel, rock and even a Beatles number just so McEuen could make the point that the Beatles should have had a banjo player.

McEuen, one of the very best banjo players around today, noted that banjos are not quite as popular elsewhere in the world as they are in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He told the story about leaving his banjo in the back seat of his car while shopping at a Walmart in California. He forgot to lock the car, and when he got back there were two more banjos in the back seat. Funny guy, McEuen.

Next week, Arlo Guthrie.

Today was a gorgeous day on the mountain. It was sunny and felt just like a fall day. The temperature was that "no feel" temperature like they have in California. The CFO and I enjoyed a hike over a portion of the old Air Bellows Gap road on the Wilkes County side of the gap.

I sculpted my second piece of garden art today, a small representation of the sun for the shade garden. After I began painting it, I wish I had left it as a rust piece. But there is no turning back now. Red and orange and yellow, here we come!
