In a Hornet's Nest
So there I was, under the mountain laurels down by the weather station, fighting my never ending battle with mountain maple saplings. I'm just ripping them out of the ground, and hurling roots, stems, leaves and all into the bushes while cursing like a sailor the whole time. That's just about the time I turned my head to the left and discovered our new neighbors ... eyeball to eyeball.
Yes, indeed, a football-sized nest of Sandhill hornets (Vespula arenaria) just inches from my nose. I looked at them and they looked at me as I ever so carefully extracted myself from their witchhazel shrub.
The handbook says they sting viciously when disturbed. Yet, living in their nest not 30 feet from the deck, they've not bothered us and we'll let them enjoy this summer on the mountain with all the other wild creatures who were there long before we were.
