Indian Pipes
As Sam and I walked our trails through the woods this morning, we came across a growth of Indian Pipes in full bloom for the first time this year. Those are the flowers dangling downward.
This strange little plant (about 4 inches tall) has no green color in its leaves, stems or flowers. The nearly white plant, a member of the Wintergreen family, is saprophytic, living on duff in the deep woods.
I've not seen it's yellow cousin, Pine Sap, yet this year but the CFO and I did see some blossoms on Squaw Root plants, a parasitic member of the Broomrape family living on tree roots, a month or so ago.
The woods are full of wonders if you just take the time to look for them!
