$9 Wine

I'm always looking for a good wine that's under $10 a bottle and I've found one. It's Lelia Garnacha 2003 for $8.99 from The Wine Merchant. Produced in the northern region of Spain by Bodgeas Sucesores de Manuel Piquer, it's made from the Grenache Noir grape. So, let's call it a Spanish Chateauneuf du Pape that tastes something like a French Burgundy. I would buy it again.

We had the wine with grilled yellow fin tuna steaks for dinner. The tuna was marinated in olive oil and orange juice and grilled over very hot charcoals until the surfaces were browned and the centers were just warm. I bought the steaks on sale from Harris Teeter as medallions for $5.99 a pound but they were good raw as sashimi. They nearly overpowered the wine.

The tuna was served with grilled zucchini halves and a funky fresh corn relish. In addition to the usual corn kernels, bacon bits, onion and peppers, this one had sun dried tomato bits, olive oil, maple syrup (to carmelize the relish) and orange juice (as a flavor bridge to the tuna). Don't try this one at home, folks, if you cook using a recipe because it's done entirely by taste!
