Happiness
Happiness is having your woodshed full of firewood on the first day of October.
The wood is mostly maple and red oak and it smells so good! Some of the oak had been on the ground for many years, possibly since Hurricane Hugo came though. Yet, while the bark and cambium were long gone to rot, the wood center was as fresh as if it had been cut earlier this year. And, when I first put my saw into the log, I thought the chain had gone dull it was so hard. Maple of that age would have been long gone to waste.
Unhappiness is having your new garden tractor stuck in the woods, deep in the woods. I went down one ledge too many to get to some black locust and could not get back out. I quickly learned that even tractor tires with chevron treads are useless on damp rocks buried under the wood loam. The harder I tried to power my way out, the deeper and deeper I got. So, I'm off to find a winch at daybreak and hopefully I'll have extracted myself -- foot by foot -- by noon tomorrow.
I must not be the only one to ever have gotten stuck. Seems there's a complete line of 12-volt winches designed for use with ATV, garden tractors and such like!
