Half Moon Pies

Well, I went into Sparta today to buy some provisions and the big find was skinned and deboned chicken thighs. I bought 1.35 pounds of them for $2.02. To me, thighs are the best part of the chicken and these made enough cacciatora to last me three days!

On the way home I stopped by Hawk's Produce to buy some apples, jack cheese, and grapefruit. At the checkout counter (OK, the place where the scale is located and you tender your money), they were selling dried apples in plastic bags and I sez to me, "Them there apples sure look like they would make some mighty fine half moon pies to me!"

Now if you don't know what a half moon pie is, I'll tell you. It is a small pie shell, filled with a mixture of dried apples, brown sugar and cinnamon, folded in half, pinched along the edges and fried in an iron skillet. Done right (and there is considerable art to it), they are about the best thing you will ever stuff down your pie hole.

Here are the ones I made today. The pie crusts are too thick and they were unevenly fried. Their size is too varied and the pinched edges are truly ugly. Indeed, they weren't nearly up to my Grandmother's standards in either aesthetics or taste but I'm sure she would have been proud that I tried.

Sam went nuts over 'em anyhow and I though them tasty myself.
