Hamburgers

Just when I thought the days of really good made-to-order hamburgers were history, the CFO and I had them for lunch yesterday at Barry's Cafe in the Swift Creek Shopping Center where Jones Franklin Road crosses Tryon Road in Cary.

Now, Barry's is mostly known as a breakfast place but they do serve lunch and dinner. The CFO and I were hungry after visits to the State Farmer's Market and Earp's Seafood and we began looking for a place along Tryon Road and up pops Barry's.

We sat at the counter and watched and smelled the burgers being cooked.

The burgers, in Momma, Pappa and Baby Bear sizes, are cooked to order. First placed on the flat grill, they are transferred to the open flame grill to finish. We asked for grilled onions and got tons of them perfectly done. You get a choice of three or four cheeses, plus lettuce, tomato and other garnishes of your choice. Chips are included but fries are extra.

The first bite of these burgers were a reminder of the burgers from 35 years ago at two different stands in Danville, VA. Wonderful stuff with that fat-on-the-fire flavor guaranteed to cause you to need a triple bypass if you ate one for lunch every day. And, best of all, the taste lingered for quite a while after you finished eating them. In fact, I can remember it still and am ready for another as I write.

Go there, folks. Open hear surgery cannot be that bad.
