In Cold Blood
Yesterday was just about as cold as Saturday and the pond was frozen over except under the water log where the flow of water strikes the surface.
The water was a chilly 42°F by late afternoon but, when I put in some goldfish food and it sank to the bottom, Sam Walton, 28 Cents and Plain Jane all came out from hiding to partake.
Goldfish and other carps like koa are, of course, cold blooded and can survive at quite low temperatures. They can even be frozen in ice and live to tell about it. The trick is to change the temperature slowly to avoid thermal shock.
