On Wednesday, June 26, 1946 the US was in the process of recovering from WWII. The New York Times reported that Mongolia was applying for entry to the UN. A new constitution was being taken up in Japan. The headlines indicated that an OPA (Office of Price Administration) measure had passed the House of Representatives, 265-105, and that a bill extending the military draft had been sent to President Truman.
In other news, a shortage of meat, expected to last for years, was hitting the resorts in the summer season. Lack of flour was expected to close 400 bakeries in the city. Cotton prices were at a 23 year high, paperboard production was up, a price increase of $0.91 per ton was set for hard coal, and hourly wages had topped the war peak of $1.06 an hour. Stock prices had ended down the previous day.
The Indians, with Bob Feller fanning 13, had beaten the Yankees, 8 to 3. And, the Reds, with 16 hits, routed the Dodgers 15-3.
While the Congregationalist were backing atomic controls (including the cessation of bomb production), the nuclear tests on Bikini Atoll were nearing. Ships and planes were being warned to avoid the area.
France was criticizing the US for coddling war captives. Trygve Lie, the first Secretary General of the United Nations, assured everyone that peace was neigh throughout the world.
Meanwhile, down in the Piedmont of North Carolina, summer was in full swing with a high of 86°F and no rain. A mean dew point of 61°F resulted in a muggy day. Over at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, the Baby Boom was getting underway in earnest and Goldie Octavia Mickey Lineback gave birth to her firstborn, a bouncing baby boy.
The world has never been the same since!
