Home Again

So it was that we set out from Baltimore at 6:30 am on Thursday, bound for Alleghany County by way of the Shenandoah Valley. The trip began on I-695 …

… and ended on Waterfall Road, some 403 miles, 4 states, and nearly 7 hours later.

Beautiful road, Waterfall.

Harper’s Ferry, WV was in route and the Potomac River there is quite a sight. I had intended to stop by the Appalachian Trail headquarters but the signs for Harper’s Ferry first pointed straight ahead and then, suddenly, straight behind. It wasn’t meant to be.

We made one stop for Dunkin Donuts coffee and another for petrol. Sam and Murphy never left the Jeep and Suzy Q slept the whole way.

We were greeted on the mountain with a summer high temperature of 86°F, some 18° lower than the 104° at RDU airport. The tomato plants had experienced some stress but the tomatoes themselves didn’t seem to mind.

The fish -- Sam Walton, 28 Cents, Plain Jane and Forrest Gump -- thrived on pond scum while we were gone and, without Sam and Murphy around, the deer ate everything in the gardens they should have and some they shouldn’t. The hummers ate all the sugar water in the feeders and left for parts unknown. But, a few are slowly returing to Dave's soup kitchen for hummingbirds.

I spent a good deal of Friday in recovery from sleep deprivation but did manage to finish and install my latest piece of yard art, WindoVane. It’s a fully functional weather vane featuring a window sash fitted with colored glass in the primary colors. The physics of weather vanes, involving bending moments about the three Cartesian axes, made for an interesting juxtaposition of art and science.

My laptop parts arrived and after some twiddling, all things technological are once again functional, including the “X” key which is just a stub sticking out of the keyboard. But, it works!

Life is good.
