Jefferson Visit

As I was driving down the Blue Ridge Parkway on Thursday for my monthly visit to the apothecary over Jefferson way, you could almost swear that autumn was upon us because so many of the trees were hues of red, yellow and brown. But, no, there's been no frost and, therefore, no autumnal leaf change. Limbs and, indeed, whole trees are dying from the drought. It's dry, dry on the mountain, folks.

Since I was in Jefferson I went to Lowes Home Improvement Center to pick up a few supplies. And, once again, I proved that you don't go to Lowes for low prices. The metal roofing I had bought at Blevins Building Supply here in Sparta was lower in price than the same roofing at Lowes! Go to Lowes for variety and one-stop shopping but go elsewhere for low prices.

On the way back I saw in the gloom of evening three fields of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) nearly ready for harvesting near Laurel Springs . What a beautiful sight with its leaves of gold! Once an important cash crop in the mountains, burley has become a rarity these days.
