Oinkster Fest
Well, folks, I may drop off the radar screen for the next few days. Tomorrow afternoon I'm off to the 2007 version of the Oinkster Festival in Pine Tree, VA.
Now the only thing in Pine Tree is the "Something Different Country Store and Deli".
And, that is run by Dan Gill, our gracious host of the festival.
Here's a photograph of Dan wearing the only thing I've ever seen him wear: long-sleeved blue Oxford shirt with rolled-up sleeves, khaki pants and (when he's not barefooted) loafers. I used to say that Dan was the perfect Virginia gentleman, showing no visible means of support, But with this Something Different thing, well, I'm confused. It has to be be a hobby or something that got out of hand, kinda like his oyster boat or those banana trees he planted a few years back.
The CFO and I will be shacking up at the Dragon Run Inn in Church View, VA. This B&B is a 1913 farmhouse with three guest rooms: Horse, Cow and Pig. We, of course, reserved the Pig Room. (In case you are wondering, the Dragon Run is a cypress swamp that provided the timber from which the house was built.)
In past years the Oinkster festival has featured such goodies as a 200-pound whole hog named named Rufus (Dan likes to give names to the critters he eats) and goats. This year the "mystery meat" will be sting ray. Tastes just like pork ribs if done right, I'm told.
I'm looking forward to this year's gathering because I'll get the chance to meet a number of barbecue guys I've communicated with by email list (some for 13 years) but have never met.
The crabs are in short supply in the creek and Dan's sweet corn crop failed three plantings, but the weekend will still be a hoot.
Guaranteed.
