Italia: Day 11
Today we drove to the area northeast of Siena, the heart of the Chianti wine country, with its chalky white soil.

Here there are vineyards as far as the eye can see. Turn onto any dirt road and you will find winery after winery.

We visited this one, Devole, that makes a Chianti for local consumption ($), a Classico ($$), a Reserve ($$$) and a Super Tuscan ($$$$).

The Sangiovese (from sanguis Jovis, "the blood of Jove") grape rules supreme her, of course.

Although the vines can live for hundreds of years, they are replaced every 25 years to maximize production.

The cows were a little strange in Chianti ...

... but the pigs looked normal.
