Italia: Day 5

On the way to Rome from Florence we stopped in Siena and Assisi.

Siena is a beautiful walled fortress town of Roman origin, located on the old Roman Cassia road (which you can still drive along to Rome).

The forum is still actively used. Two horse races are held there each year between horses from each section of town. The first horse, with or without rider, to cross the finish line is the winner.

Located in the heart of Tuscany, Siena is a town full of shops.

There seems to be an abundance of really nice butcher shops.

Looks like the fox got into this one.

Pizza anyone?

I bet you these would raise an eyebrow in Cary!

Assisi, on the other hand, is more sombre.

The tomb of St. Francis is located in these churches, one built above the other. No photographs allowed here.

Located on a hilltop, every street goes up and down.

To my eye, Assisi was the most beautiful town that I saw in Italy.
