Turkey Day 2007

Matteo arrived Wednesday afternoon and we managed to get in nine holes of golf. The weather and course were beautiful.

Thriller brought me this most excellent beer keg. It's an old Genesee that The Donald probably sampled from in his youth. Anyhow, there's a "Donald loves Mary Ann" scratched into the side of it.

Now, the only problem with having a son for a chef is that the chef generally does not want to cook when on holiday! But, Matteo did make us an excellent blackberry sauce for the roast pork we had Wednesday evening. He also made a tasty garlic butter for the artichoke appetizer and he baked up some delicious lemon cookies from the dough Alia had sent along with him. We missed having Alia with us but enjoyed her cookies!

Oh, out of hunger, Matteo made us some Cuban sandwiches for lunch on Thursday from the left-over pork loin. Yummy.

After getting the turkey in the pit on Thanksgiving Day, we had a round of target practice. Here Matteo helps Thriller load her BB pistol.

Pistol-packing Thriller kills a tin can.

Matteo shows his form with the Remington 514.

And, the CFO takes dead aim.

A cold front moved in mid-afternoon, chasing us inside where we watched some football on the "suck your brains out" television.

Matteo and the CFO snuggle.

By 6:00 the turkey was done and Thriller collects the mess of collards she cooked. Sam, with his radar vision, keeps his eyes on the turkey.

A little "pulled" turkey before dinner is always the best. Matteo brined the bird overnight and we smoke it in Sidney over oak coals. Wonderful stuff.

In addition to the turkey (Matteo & Dave) and collards (Thriller), we enjoyed sweet potatoes (CFO), cranberry sauce (Ocean Sprey), baked stuffing (Pepperidge Farms), giblet gravey (Dave), bread rolls (La Farm with a most able assist by the CFO) and pumpkin pie (Thriller).

Spud and his new parents, Wawa and Ed, were in Chicago visiting with his uncle, grandmother and great grandfather. Here's to you guys!

Sure hope everyone had as great a Thanksgiving Day as we did.
