Turkey Fly

As I was going down Waterfall Road today I ran into a flock of a dozen, or more, wild turkeys. As I stopped to turn my camera on, they waddled on down the road. When I caught up with them, most ran into the woods on the right. But these, three hens and a tom, went left.

Out in the open with a green Jeep containing a human and two dogs staring at them, the hens took leave in short order. The tom, shown here in flight, joined them soon afterwards.

Yes, turkeys can fly but it's not a pretty sight. It's kinda like a 350-pound lineman running with the football after recovering a fumble! There is a lot of huffing and puffing, producing a limited forward speed.

On my return trip I saw a flock of grouse. They are even more skittish than turkeys and I never even got my camera turned on before they entered the woods. So, no photographs them.
