Foothills Grocery

I have a new favorite lunch place now, the Foothills Grocery. It's located in Wilkes County on the left hand side of US-21N just past the Thurmond Community Center and before you get to the escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I stopped there on my way to the flatlands for gasoline and as I was pumping the gas, this most wonderful aroma wafted over me. It was fried chicken livers.

At the Foothills Grocery you can buy:

  • gasoline
  • kerosene
  • liquid propane
  • convenience store groceries
  • fresh produce
  • country hams
  • local canned goods
  • fried apple pies
  • hardware
  • deer corn
  • livestock feed
  • udder balm
  • newspapers
  • cigarettes
  • lottery tickets
  • beer
  • wine
  • soda pop
  • And, prepared food. Plates lunches, burgers, dogs, sandwiches.

I had a wonderful lunch of fried chicken livers, pinto beans with fresh onions and slaw with cornbread and a Coke. You just step up to the display case and tell 'em what you want. They've even added some booth seating for those who want to eat in.

The food reminds me of road food before Interstates and MacDonald's.
