Moon Rise Over Winter

Magically, the water pipe thawed just as the moon was rising over the Blue Ridge Mountains. My theory is that 14°F is warmer than 3°F and the heat from the earth (55°F just below the surface) was enough at 14°F above the surface to thaw the clog. A controlled drip is definitely on the agenda for tonight.

When I turned the pump on, of course, I quickly learned that I had not turned the washing machine spigots off when I drained the lines, and the utility room and I got soaked by cold streams of water from them.

In anticipation of an even colder night tonight, I have the wood stove in the basement going, a fire in the fireplace in the main room, and the kerosene heater we bought 6 years ago, but never used, burning along the window wall.

Bring it on, baby!
