Ship of State
I've been in the flatlands for the past two days, searching the News & Observer in vain for some good news. The closest thing I could find was the statement by Dubya regarding the West Bank that "There should be an end to the occupation that began in 1967." That he would be allowed to make such a statement by his advisers is a good sign that the most influential Straussians have now jumped his administration's ship. It is unfortunate, of course, that Dubya made the statement 7 years too late to do anything about it, and the Straussians, knowing that, are already searching for, and promoting, a new ship to board next January.
Indeed, on the night of the New Hampshire primary, Jim Geraghty was already on television, dissing John McCain (as Strauss himself had dissed Hitler) for being too far to the left to make a good Straussian presidential candidate.
The ideal Straussian candidate? Well, that would be Mike Huckabee with (a) no Washington "IOU" baggage, (b) an "opiate of the masses" religious leaning, and (3) zero foreign affairs experience. Other presidents coming into office with these same Straussian credentials? Ronald Reagan and George "Dubya" Bush.
And, uh, did I mention that Huckabee is a former chairman of the Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission?
