Chee!
In search of something different for breakfast this morning, I rummaged through the freezing compartment of the refrigerator and found three bagels of uncertain origin and vintage. Perfect! If, of course, some cream cheese can be found to slather on toasted halves.
Yes, indeed, an inspection of the storage compartments in the door of the refrigerator soon wielded this package of Philadelphia Original Cream Cheese produced by (or maybe for) Kraft Foods of Glenview, Illinois.
Everything was coming together until I actually picked up the package of cheese. It appeared to have shrunken centers on the sides and had a feel to the touch that was anything but creamy. Hmmm.
"Best when purchased by date on end. Use within 10 days of opening. Keep refrigerated. For best quality, do not freeze.", read the consumer advisory.
Refrigerated: Check.
Unfrozen: Check.
Unopened package: Check.
Purchase by date: 02 SEP 2004.
Now, folks, I want to know how it is possible for a package of Philadelphia Original Cream Cheese to remain unopened in a refrigerator door for 41 months! Indeed, this particular one has been in two refrigerator doors. It had already been in the Big House refrigerator for 27 months when it was moved to the Town House refrigerator in December 2006.
Next thing you know a team of anthropologists will be digging through our refrigerator in search of clues to life in America during the early twenty-first century.
I'm going to put this package of cream cheese back in the door for them to find.
