Cancun

As I sit here enjoying my first cup of morning coffee, it's freaking 29°F outside. -1°C. The hummingbirds are banging their beaks against the ice on the feeders, saying "Why? Why? Why? I could still be sunbathing on the beach in Cancun."

OK. I made up the part about breaking their beaks but everything else is true. The high in Cancun yesterday was 86°F with a low of 70°F.

This may come as a surprise to no one, but I'm not the most patient person. While not in the Lyle class, I'm not fond of waiting on anything, including the weather. That makes horticulture difficult for me. I walk down to the Hillside Garden at least twice a day to check on its progress. When I can see no visible change, I do what Lyle would do. I go back up the hill to the Jeep, honk the horn a couple of times, and yell "Grandma was slow but she was old!"

I do keep reminding myself that the frost-free date here on the mountain is sometime late May and a right brain-left brain battle goes on in my head daily to wait until then to set out tomato plants.

Two weekends again the CFO and I planted pumpkin and sunflower seeds in trays for germination in the greenhouse. I checked on Sunday and nothing had happened. I beeped the horn. Nothing. So, late yesterday, I took the remaining nine pumpkin seeds down to the garden and planted them in three new hills I prepared for them. When I got back to the house, I checked the greenhouse and everything had sprouted overnight.

Go figure.
