Fair Weather Friend
Go ahead, Old Man Sol, go hide your shining face behind the Peach Bottoms. With a frost forecast for tonight, you are some fair weather friend.
I give up! I did go down and cover the tops of the apple trees with plastic bags. Everything else is on its own. I came back to the house, started a fire and baked a cake. Comfort food.
While bagging the trees I heard Sam thrashing around in a big brush pile full of briers and all manner of mean and nasty things. She had "treed" a ground squirrel in a hollow log and was hot on its trail. She was literally tearing the log apart with her teeth. The chipmunk won this round but the old gal still has a lot of spunk.
I made my weekly visit to town today for provisions. When I saw that gasoline was $3.59 a gallon for regular, I got out as quickly as I could.
On the way home I stopped by Hawk's Produce. I now have an arrangement with them in which they save compostable material for me and today I brought home my first batch of about 30 gallons. Really nice stuff. Cabbage leaves, corn husks, etc. And, best of all, it's free of charge! Looks like Clifford's youngest son is taking over management of the store and he's not only sharp as a tack but is quite environmentally savvy. Nice kid.
