Matteo Visit

Matteo came from Asheville to visit this weekend and stopped by JR Cigar in Statesville to make an emergency purchase for the old man. I was getting dangerously low and his visit was most fortuitous.

Now here is a scene I never would have expected to see in all my born days. The CFO was slow to accept computers, but Matteo was a complete computer Luddite. But it seems that the restaurant uses email to communicate with customers and gave Matteo a laptop with instructions to use it. Because he has held out so long, it will be interesting to see if he does the Luddite-to-Geek "flop" so often seen.

Anyhow, we had plans to play golf on Saturday afternoon but rain kept coming in droves and we decided to wait until Sunday morning when the weather prognosis was somewhat better. The CFO brought a beautiful Carolina roe shad from the flatlands and cooked it up for dinner along with mixed greens and corn on the cob. Matteo made some wonderful fried roe with capers, lemon juice and I don't know what else. All I know is that it was great with the sloooow-baked (6 hours!) shad with bread stuffing.

The rain continued into the evening, accompanied at one time by thunder and lightening. At the first Boom!, Dharma (weighing in at sometime around 100 pounds) was into the bathtub, her customary safe haven from storms. She didn't come out either without quite a bit of coaxing.

Sunday morning we teed off in nice weather but by the time we got to the fifth tee (a par three), we saw mallards swimming on the green. After the sixth, we reached a consensus to avoid the possibility of death by drowning and came in. By the time we got home, the weather was, naturally, just fine. So, we had a nice lunch of soup and cheese sandwiches before going on a hike with the dogs back to the brook.

Despite the rain, it was a most enjoyable weekend. We don't see Matteo that often (first time since Christmas) and the only thing that would have made it better is if Alia had been able to come as well.
