Windows Aren't for the Birds
As I sit here enjoying a few Spam sandwiches for lunch, I am also watching a hummingbird that flew in through the front door try to figure out how to get outside again. It just cannot comprehend windows. While it doesn't go crashing beakfirst into the window wall, it is confused as to just why it cannot fly through it.
Earlier today as I was eating breakfast, I heard a "thud" and saw this bird (looks like a Northern Parula to me) come crashing to the deck outside. I thought it was dead but after a few moments it regained its footing and attempted to flap its wings before falling over on its side once again. Five minutes later it had recovered enough to sit up once more and shake its head. Half an hour later, the critter was gone, presumably with a really big headache.
As for the hummer, his pea brain can get him to Mexico and back with ease but it hasn't figured out that the secret is to "go low" where the doors are standing open for his escape. He almost does so when another hummer comes to the feeder outside and he becomes aggitated because he cannot chase the intruder away. As for now, he's roosting in the rafters!
