Going to Hell
At first glance of this week's edition of the Alleghany News, nothing looked out of the ordinary. One motorcyclist (New Jersey) killed himself while two others (Maryland and Montreal, Quebec only managed to badly mangle themselves in separate accidents on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Yet another hospital picture of yet another ugly newborn fresh from the womb appeared on the page opposite the obituaries. In sports, the Rolling Pins team with a record of 27 wins and 9 losses are atop the Trojan Family Bowling Coffee and Donut League standings. The Pine Fork Baptist Church Youth will have a Car Wash and Barbeque (a somewhat unconventional combination with buns playing a part in both) this coming Saturday in the First Community Bank parking lot.
Then, suddenly and out of left field with no warning, there is was: "Petition for liquor by the drink initiated in Sparta." The owners of Bella Notté (yes, that is an acute "e, folks") Italian Restaurant have initiated a petition drive to serve LIQUOR BY THE DRINK in SPARTA. It ain't a done deal yet. They must get 35% of the registered voters in Sparta to sign a petition to hold a referendum on whether or not to allow restaurants to serve LIQUOR BY THE DRINK in SPARTA. Since the ABC store (located just across the street from Bella Notté) is run by the city, the special election will be only in the city.
Now folks, this is going to get interesting. Signs will pop up in lawns like mushrooms after a rain storm with a Martini glass surrounded by a red circle with a red slash across it at a 45° angle. Letters to the editor will spill over from the Editorial Page into the real estate listings. Blood will be running down Main Street past the Alleghany Court House (diagonally across the street from Bella Notté). Prayer meetings will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights in churches of all denominations (excepting, of course, for the Catholics and their besotted English cousins, the Episcopalians).
The owners of Bella Notté, naturally, ain't from around here and just don't know not of what they do.
