The Swiss, being the efficient people that they are, are aiming to become a 2,000-Watt Society. That means their objective is to, on average, consume per person no more energy of all kinds than what is consumed by twenty 100-watt light bulbs burning continuously.
The people of Bangladesh consume the equivalent of three 100-watt bulbs. In India, it is ten light bulbs. China consumes the equivalent of fifteen bulbs burning continuously.
The folks living in Western Europe consume energy at the rate of sixty 100-watt light bulbs while those of us here in the US use the energy required for 120 100-watt bulbs.
Switzerland today is a fifty-bulb nation and was last a twenty-bulb nation in the early 1960's. What lead to such a dramatic increase in 40 years? Well, the big ones are the increased use of automobiles and airplanes coupled with a relative decline in the use of rail travel. That and the increased use of electrical appliances and electronic devices.
And, just how expensive is jet travel, for example, in terms of energy? Well, one trip back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean by an individual amounts to the consumption of roughly the energy that the average citizen of Bangladesh uses in an entire year.
Our insane increase in the use of energy from all sources must be brought to an end. And, as the Saudi Arabian oil minister Sheikh Yamani once said, "The Stone Age didn't end because there were no more stones. It ended because people became more intelligent."
