How 'Bout Them Jugs?
Now here is an amazing thing. The only physical difference in a Harley-Davidson Sportster XL 883 and XL 1200 is the diameter of the pistons! In fact, one can go from 883 cc's to 1200 cc's by simply boring out the jugs and replacing the 883 pistons with 1200 pistons. No head changes. Nothing.
That and 2007 was the 50th anniversary of the introduction of the Sportster back in 1957.
Harley-Davidson has had one or more versions of a V-twin engine since 1911. This one, the Evolution, dates back to 1984. It was first used in the Sportster in 1986, some 22 years ago. It's not uncommon for folks to put 250,000+ trouble-free miles on these engines. I mean, when you reach the knee of the torque curve and it's time to change gears at only 2500 rpm, what's to wear out?
