July 4
This July 4 found us (CFO and Dave) with children (Wawa, Thriller, Matteo), grandchildren (Spud), brothers (Giuseppe #1) and sisters (Sis), nieces (Daffodil) and all the others (Da Bear, Bonnie, Giuseppe #2, Patrick and Alia) of our extended family — fourteen in all — on the mountain for a little summertime fine dining.

Thriller picked up the "guest of honor" at Nahunta Park Center in Raleigh and drove the pig packed with ice to the mountains the evening before.

Weighing in at 50 pounds, the butterflied barbecue pig fit nicely into the Pete Jones Memorial eastern N.C.style whole hog pit.

The making of coals began at 6:00 am and ...

... the pig was all done by 2:00 pm.

One side was chopped and the other left intact for picking on the deck.
The star of the show, naturally, was Spud.

"Oh, boy!," says he, having had no trouble finding the beverage tub. (He's a chip off Da Bear's block!)

"Hmmm. That just might be the one right here.

"Yup. My favorite."

"Ah! If only I could get the $#^$&@%^% pop top off."
(If you don't think your children watch what do, look no further, folks.)
And, a part of the crew chows down.
Bonnie brought a wonderful chocolate pound cake, Sis made banana pudding, Matteo prepared the slaw, Wawa brought Johnston County field-grown tomatoes, and the CFO cooked the corn-on-the-cob to go with the baked beans that Da Bear and I made. Later that evening Alia taught me how to make a really nice peach-pear sorbet in my little ice-cream maker.
I was great to have everyone together at one time.
