Logistics II
I now have the logistics problem of getting two vehicles and two dogs to the mountains. No matter how you cut it, that requires me to drive to the mountains twice with a vehicle and ride off the maintain once without one.
At the moment my plans are to ride Buster to the mountains tomorrow, leaving Sam and Murphy with the CFO overnight. I'll catch a ride with my neighbors to Winston-Salem on Wednesday, take the Greyhound from there to Raleigh, and then ride the TTA to Cary. After finishing up things here in Cary, I'll then drive the Jeep back to the mountains with the dogs.
Now the interesting part is the Greyhound bus link. Five buses leave Winston-Salem for Raleigh each day. Stops are made in Greensboro, High Point, Durham and sometimes Burlington and the trip takes either 2 hours and 45 minutes or 3 hours (with Burlington). The fare? $20.50 one way without discounts. (I'll get a 5% discount for being at least 62 years of age!) In a car with a single passenger, one would need to get better than 20 mpg to beat that!
The fnal leg of the trip is by TTA bus from the Greyhound station in downtown Raleigh to the intersection of Cary Parkway and Kildaire Farm Road in Cary. That cost is $2. (One must be 65 years of age to qualify for the "Senior" fare of $1.)
Now, if I wanted to also use the Alleghany in Motion public transportation service at the other end, I would need to give them 24 hours notice and then I could hitch a ride with someone they are transporting to a medical appointment in Winston-Salem for $12. If I ask to be dropped at the bus station, the cost would increase to $20.
Accordingly, I can go portal-to-portal from Air Bellows to Cary on public transportation for as little as $33.48 (including discounts)!
"Take the bus and leave the driving to us!"
