Road Trip
Buster is now on the mountain after a circuitous road trip of 5 hours and 182 miles from Cary.
It's normally a trip of 3 hours and 145 miles but I wanted to avoid Interstate highways and almost did. From Cary I planned to travel US-64 to Mocksville, US-601 to Booneville, NC-67 to Elkin and US-21 to the Blue Ridge Parkway. But the routing of US-64 in Lexington is a complete mystery to me and I soon found myself heading to Charlotte on I-85 in the midst of a host of big rigs. That little "oops" and the attendant backtrack added an extra 10 miles. Now the most direct route from Mocksville would have been US-901 to US-21 in Harmony but Billy is nearly out of goat feed and I needed to stop by Booneville Feed and Milling to arrange for some corn meal. That added another 10 miles or so. Where the others went, I haven't a clue!
As for the time, there was the extra 37 miles, of course. But most of the extra time can be attributed to stops. My butt is not accustomed to riding on a motorcycle seat for long periods of time. In fact, it appreciated a rest every thirty minutes or so! I had (1) a coffee in Siler City, (2) a gas stop in Lexington, (3) a barbecue sandwich somewhere between Lexington and Mocksville, (4) a leg stretch in Yadkinville, (5) a stop at the feed mill in Booneville and (6) a stop at Glade Creek Mill Pond on the Parkway.
Along the way I had but one "surprise" and that was a car slowing to turn into a driveway without a signal. The "Two Second Rule" worked, Buster's brakes performed well and I was never in danger.
This was my first road trip on Buster and I was somewhat apprehensive before I got underway because of my inexperience with riding motorcycles. But, once underway, it was a blast!
Life is, indeed, a journey and not a destination.
