Tarheel Q

While cruising down US-64 west of Lexington on Buster a few days ago I passed Tarheel Q and smelled smoke ... barbecue smoke. A check of my watch revealed that it was lunchtime somewhere in the world and so it was I did a U-turn as gracefully as I could on a Harley-Davidson.

I've been by this place any number of times but had never given them a try. Sorry I had not because it's a classic barbecue joint, folks. Stools at the counter. Booths and tables. Just right except for that awful Carolina-blue color scheme.

The Lexington-style shoulders are still hand chopped at Tarheel Q.

They have three full-sized Lexington-style brick pits out back painted NC State red on the outside.

Coals are made by burning down hardwood slabs.

And here those bad boys are, cooked fifteen at a time under cover of cardboard as is traditional to keep ashes off them. Good stuff. (He was pushing this batch a little because it was 11:00 and he was sold out of barbecue. Mine was the last order.)

The place also cooks chickens and ribs on certain nights of the week.

Tarheel Q is located at 6835 US 64 West, Lexington, NC 27292, on the eastern banks of the Yadkin River.

Visit them. You'll be glad you did!
