Mystery Solved
Now I've been worried about how the wires would be removed from my hand. Mystery solved! They are just big metal pins with yellow plastic heads stuck into the top of my hand to hold the bones in place while they heal. The pins will be extracted in three weeks by simply pulling them out. The hand is still somewhat puffy and I am told will will remain so for a few more weeks.
Two incisions were made during surgery. The long one to the left was made to repair the two broken metacarpal bones (4th and 5th) and the shorter one over my middle finger (3rd) was made to repair the dislocated knuckle joint.
I got a new custom-molded splint today. It has little bumps on top to avoid contact with the pin heads and can be removed for hand exercises and bathing.
The surgeon indicated that the most serious injury was to the dislocated joint (middle knuckle) and it required quite a bit of doing to repair.
In general, all is going well with the recovery of my hand.
The #%&^@%&$& bruised ribs are another story entirely.
