The Fog Open
Well, folks, I've been incognito for a few days. The Boyz, you understand, were on the mountain to play in the annual pro-am, popularly known as The Fog Open, at High Meadows.
The team was lead by Gentle Ben, Director of Golf and PGA Master Professional at Macgregor Downs. Gentle has hollow legs that hold amazing quantities of Bud Light when "off duty".
I hadn't seen Sparky for quite a while. He is the long-ball hitter in the group.
Fishy is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and he was kind enough to fill in for me when I broke my hand. A native of Hong Kong and die-hard NC State fan, Fishy gets his handle from his love of angling. He even has his own private 19-acre lake!
The fourth member of the team was Large who always plays High Meadows very well. Okay, maybe not always but most of the time anyhow.
I served as the team caddy. To keep my cast dry, I drove around the golf course with a plastic sack from a loaf of bread, held in place by a rubber band, over my left arm. Looked funny but worked like a charm.
The Boyz arrived for a practice round on Sunday and I made them some Lexington-style barbecue, slaw, baked beans, corn-on-the-cob and banana pudding for dinner that evening. The weather was beautiful and we sat on the deck swapping lies until late in the night. Trouble is our definition of "late" is getting earlier and earlier in recent years.
On the Monday, the first day of the tournament, the weather was so-so with a little drizzle ever now and again.
Then it started raining ... all night long.
We began the second day in a heavy drizzle but by the 12th hole, the tournament had lived up to its name, The Fog Open.
Here's the wet but still cheerful team on the 17th tee. There is a green some 150 yards behind them ... in the fog.
This proved to be the last hole played. Play was suspended because the fairways had become very slippery and High Meadows is a mountain course.
Now, as a parting shot, here is the most unusual lie of the weekend. Gentle Ben's drive on 12 came to rest on the root of a pine tree, wedged in place by a pine cone and a twig. Amazing!
The Boyz were great sports, doing the domestic chores I could not do with one hand, from shucking corn to loading the dish washer. Large even buttoned my pants for me!
It was my great pleasure to having the guys on the mountain again and I look forward to the next time around.
