PT Progress

Physical therapy is progressing nicely on my broken hand. The big issue now is to eliminate the adhesion between the dorsal tendons and the underlying tissue to enable me to open my hand completely.

Here's a diagram of the tendons with those involved in my hand denoted with red arrows. They go through a tunnel in the wrist and connect to a muscle in your forearm that actually does the opening of your hand. The fingers are just along for the ride. This I know because I've been connected to the Frankenstein Electroshock Machine a few times. One electrode is placed near your elbow and another near your wrist. When the juice is turned on, the muscles in your arm begins to twitch and so do your fingers. Other forms of torture include massage, ultrasound, hot desert sandstorms, and use of various interesting toys ill suited to the comfort of injured hands.

As far as the ventral tendons (palm) that close the hand, they are in much better shape and much easier to fix. So, all we are doing with these presently is working on hand strength. Atrophy occurs amazingly fast. Use it or lose it!

The ligament around the knuckle in my middle finger was pretty much destroyed and we are working on overcoming scar tissue from reconstructive surgery there as well.
