Rain

The rain lies mainly in the plain this year. Indeed, it has been a very dry summer here on the mountain, punctuated by two rainy spells. The first spell was in early July and the second, just last week with something over six inches of precipitation.

Last year we were rated as being in a mild drought condition. This year, we are rated as the most severe.

The pumpkins in the Hillside Garden, which needs lots of water to get really big, have been stunted in their growth. This variety can reach hundreds of pounds in weight with proper access to water.

The poor sunflowers are less than half the size they should be.

The trees are taking a beating also with many leaves like this one from a red maple drying out prematurely. Driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway last week looked as if it were early fall. The heavy rains, however, have knocked off most of the dry leaves, leaving the forest floor covered with them.
