My Dog Has Fleas

We took two critters, Sam and Murphy, to Mayfair Animal Hospital to board them while we were at the beach. When I picked them up, we came home with dozens more critters. Yup, Sam and Murphy and a whole flock of fleas.

Upon their return home, both dogs were scratching like crazy. It never occurred for us to check for fleas. Indeed, the dogs have never had fleas because we use Frontline on them to keep the pests away. After a couple of days, however, the CFO turns Murphy over and finds Ctenocephalides canis crawling all over his belly.

Now, you understand, we had just paid Mayfair $23 per dog per day for boarding (as opposed to $10 per dog per day at Twin Oaks up on the mountain) and didn't realize the fee included a generous supply of take-home fleas. So the CFO calls Mayfair to seek remedy. They tell her that we can either wash the dogs in Downy or come back to Mayfair and buy two pills for $5 each to rid the dogs of fleas. She explains that we brought them two flea-free dogs for boarding and expected to get back two flea-free dogs. They told the CFO that they have no way of knowing the dogs were flea-free when we brought them.

Now, folks, if you have been paying an animal hospital to take care of your pets over a period of 26 years, would it seem unreasonable to expect them to believe you? Apparently not these days.

The CFO further explained the dogs have been on Frontline anti-flea and -tick medication all summer. They then pronounced that Cary fleas (Ctenocephalides canis var. Caryitus) have become immune to Frontline and that only Brand X (which they just happen to carry in stock) works. (An underling intimated that they have been having a terrible problem with fleas of late.) Accordingly, the fact that Sam and Murphy came home with fleas is our fault since we were not using Brand X anti-flea and -tick repellent. That any of this was going on was not divulged at check-in apparently is irrelevant.

So, for the second time in two weeks we have parted ways with a small business in Cary with which we have been loyal customers for over a quarter century.

Cary is going to the dogs, folks.
