Here are the 25 U.S. Senators voting against the financial rescue bill last evening.

The Republicans voting against numbered 14 while Democrats numbered 10. (The discrepancy of 1 was an Independent.)

The most startling demographic, however, was geography. A total of 13 votes against were from western states, most with small populations. The south accounted for 10 votes. The remaining two were from the north and midwest.

Only 8 Senators who voted against the bill were running for reelection while 15 were incumbents. (The remaining two are retiring.) Thus, with a ratio of almost exactly 1:3, reelection status appears to have played no statistical role in the vote.
