Another Hole in the Head

I made yet another trip to Galax yesterday for bodywork.

After much searching and many false starts, I have found a Certified Hand Therapist in — of all places — Galax and Independence. And, so, before my dental appointment I had my first therapy session with Stephanie. She is very bright and very good at what she does. My hand was literally black and blue when she was finished with me. The clinic where she practices is part of the Twin Counties Medical Center, the counties being Grayson and Carroll Counties. And that's why they have a satellite office in the nearby town of Independence (one stop light), the county seat of Grayson. That's where I'll be at 7:45 am tomorrow.

I had scheduled the hand therapy session before my dental session because I feared for the worst. A large chunk of my last remaining wisdom tooth (#1 in the dental numbering system) had broken off shortly before Thanksgiving and dentists don't have much regard for wisdom teeth, especially if they are blemished. So, Dr. Susan, in her very folksy manner, explained the options.

"Well, we can leave it alone and let it rot. But eventually it will become infected and the side of your face will blow up as big as the side of a barn. Then after curing the infection, we can extract it. Alternatively, I've got the time, the know how, and the equipment to extract it right now. What do you want to do?"

I explained that I had already steeled myself for extraction.

Now this lady really likes her work and always gives a running commentary. "That thing is as loose as a goose but it doesn't want to go around the bend. Let's try this." Pop! Out it came. She and the technician ceremoniously present me with the tooth in a little plastic box to take home as a souvenir.

Both the extraction and recovery have been virtually painless.

  1. Please share more about Dr. Susan. I want to change from Dr. Jerry Butler in Boone. Galax is closer to Mouth of Wilson.
