Mordecai House

The Mordecai House, the oldest dwelling in Raleigh on its original location and dating from 1785, was open on Saturday with all its Christmas deckings. It was a thoroughly interesting tour.

This is the new front to the house added in 1826. The original portion, consisting of two rooms, is attached behind.

The lower room served as a living space.

The upper room was for sleeping. Check out the bathtub!

... and the new dining room.

In those days the kitchens were built separately from the main house because kitchen fires often burned down the houses. Indeed, this is not the original kitchen as it burned down in the 1870's. As part of a Civil War enactment on the grounds, these ladies were cooking dinner.

Apparently not all reinactors are good fire builders!

The house in which Andrew Johnson, the 17th President, is believed to have been born is now located on the grounds.

The Johnson family quarters were located upstairs. This is the fanciest chamber pot I've ever seen!

I've lived in the Raleigh area on and off since 1964 and this was the first time I've ever seen, much less been in, the Mordecai house. Click here for more details.
