Sign of the Time
On the way to the mountains today, the CFO and I had planned to stop in Winston-Salem for barbecue at Little Richard's. Our plans were altered by Suzy Q. When she saw the cat carrier, she went into hiding and it took us the better part of an hour to find her ... in the townhouse! Lunch at Little Richard's was then out of the question.
So, we went to Allen and Son on NC-86 north of Chapel Hill. Closed.
That left only the possibility of Stamey's in Greensboro on our route. Open but crowded.
As I was walking from the parking lot I took a gander at their woodpile and here is what I saw. All logs.
What's wrong with this picture? Well, here's their woodpile about ten years ago. All hardwood furniture scrap.
When the furniture business went to China, Stamey's wood supply dried up and they have changed back to hardwood logs.
Now, that's just fine for Stamey's barbecue but horrible for the local economy.
The free market system, folks, could care less.
