Busy, Busy, Busy

It's been a busy two days in the flatlands with lots of running around to thrift shops, restaurant supply stores, and the NC Department of Commerce.

Seems that I made three errors in my application for an LLC charter and, since I was in the area, I went directly to the Department of Commerce to make sure I didn't make errors in the corrections to my errors. Now DOC is in building directly across the street from the State Capitol and, upon entering it, I felt I had just stepped back into the 19th century. Anyhow, the guard directed me to the right person located inside what could pass for one of those old bank teller cages made of metal bars. The lady was very helpful in sorting out my errors and assured me that my charter would arrive in the mail within five days. Then I can point my business alias (Backwoods Bean Coffee Shop) at the LLC, obtain casualty insurance and buy stuff for the shop without paying NC sales tax on it.

I also purchased a business membership to Sam's Club. After a great deal of research, it became apparent that no vendor could beat the prices of consumables used in a coffee shop. So, I winced and bit the bullet. The good news is that most of the consumables used in a coffee shop are not made in China (which just today was recognized as the third largest economy in the world).

I've become quite the connoisseur of thrift shops and the Raleigh has a wide variety of them. Salvation Army and Goodwill shops are uniformly good but my favorite is Habitat for Humanity's ReStore. Now Habitat doesn't use used materials in the houses they sell but do accept materials salvaged from deconstructed and reconstructed houses. Accordingly, when you walk into a ReStore store it's just like walking into a Lowe's store except everything has been recycled. I bought a kitchen wall oven for $45, an under-the-cabinet microwave for $25 and a two-tub stainless steel sink complete with faucet for $20. With few excepts (masonry being one of them), you could nearly build and furnish a house with stuff from there. Astounding.
